Social Performance Management – led by Anton Simanowitz and Katherine Knotts (coordinates with SPM Network)

  • Create a technical assistance fund to provide needed resources to MFIs who wish to develop a SPM system in their organization. Social audit and rating tools identify areas for MFIs to improve their systems, and a technical assistance fund would support organizations to act on those recommendations.
  • Help MFIs know how to implement tools, adapted to needs (feedback loops) – use Forums (online, workshops) for sharing
  • Link SPM indicators to performance, help staff use and analyze data
  • Tap global expertise – find more opportunities to share experiences, detailed case studies, etc
  • Organize regional trainings

Dear all,

One of the ideas that came out of the 'next steps in SPM' process is the need to ensure that capacity building in microfinance in general includes a social performance perspective. There is a huge amount of capacity building taking place, but most does not take account of the social goals of the MFI and the implications of these for the MFI's design and systems. At best this is a missed opportunity for 'balanced performance management' at worst it has potentially negative impacts on social performance.

The Imp-Act Consortium has secured funds to develop a project to address this issue and we will be seeking a range of collaborators to help take this forward.

I am posting below a draft of a 'call for collaborators', which i will start sending out on Monday 20th. In the mean-time i'd be grateful for the following input from you:

- feedback on the content of the document
- suggestions of organisations/individuals to send the call for collaborators to (management consultants, networks, training organisations etc)
- expressions of interest if you would like to be involved in this project

Look forward to hearing from you,

Anton

SP Indicators Blog

The Social Performance Indicators Blog aims to serve as a platform for learning and exchange on topics related to social performance in microfinance. Each week we will address a different subject related to social performance measurement by interviewing relevant stakeholders, with the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of how to assess the social performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and contributing to the need for information and greater transparency within the industry. www.spblog.org
